Over the last decade or so, I’ve been privileged to meet many exceptional designers and passionate horophiles. I first became aware of ‘MAN of the SEA’ on a Facebook watch forum. What originally struck me was the ornate nature of these pieces. It was clear the owner, Don Weismantel, is meticulous about fine detail. After several conversations, Don (affectionately known as Peg Leg Don) explained the inspiration behind the brand. In bygone days, bronze was used for everyday items like door hinges, but also for canons and ornate weaponry. Don wanted to employ an ancient wax casting technique to fabricate bespoke cases. Very kindly he sent me a piece called the ‘Smooth Seas’ for review purposes. Impressively, the watch arrived in a beautifully crafted treasure chest-style case.

I’ve written articles about numerous bronze watches, but I’ve rarely seen anything as ornate as the ‘Smooth Seas’. The bezel is garnished with scrolls like a traditional art frame, and the case with nautical anchor references. I absolutely love the hand-painted dial, which depicts a miniature artwork of a ship sailing on a calm sea. This really is an exquisite touch that distinguishes it from a lot of generic pieces on the market. Even though the diameter of the bezel is 48mm, the watch wears much larger due to the cushion shape case. However. I was genuinely surprised by how comfortable this watch feels on the wrist.
